Are you disorganized? Do you have piles of stuff? Is time wasted searching for missing items? Do you overlook appointments? Are you missing due dates for your bills? Do you work too many hours due to the disorganization? Is being disorganized keeping you from doing the things in life you truly love? Strategize - Now you must set your course of action. How will you incorporate your list effectively?

Familiarize - You need to acquaint yourself with your individual situation. Unique items on your list need to be analyzed thoroughly. Having done your familiarizing, now your goals need to be set . {sorry, another list} Which items need to be earmarked urgent? Rearrange your first list from the most significant to the least important. {the junk drawer probably doesn-t need to be at the top}.

Organize - Start your process of getting organized, by taking a long hard look at the number one position on your second list. What exactly do you need to do to accomplish this task?

Let-s practice with this example: a pile of papers. Have your shredder within arm-s reach. Anything needed to be shredded goes directly there, not in a pile. Your garbage can is the next necessary item of use. All garbage goes in the garbage. NOW.

Arrange the papers by categories. For example, bills, how to manuals for appliances, insurance information, kids school papers, junk mail, etc. Don-t touch that junk mail more than once. It-s shredder or garbage material.

Number one, you now have less paper. Number two you have now begun to see what kind of files or systems you need.

Personalize - Building a system that is personalized for you and your individual needs.

We all have different -papers-. Therefore, we require distinctive systems personalized just for us. Believing firmly, keeping it simple is the best way to go. This way we eliminate a -to be filed- pile. Utilizing simple a method does just that. It remains simple, therefore you are apt to apply the technique.

Optimize - your system making it as functional as possible. Denoting, it works for you and your situation. After all, if you didn-t use a system before, how could a complicated structure work now? You may make changes as time goes on, that-s OK.

Finalizing - finally! Do you need a file for insurance policies? Auto, home and life policies can all be in one file. Anything needed for tax purposes, together. Keeping it simple! Everything hinging now on your ability to follow through.

Stabilize - your system and utilize it to your fullest advantage. Open the mail at your garbage can and shredder. File, as papers arrive. Remember, you have a effortless system. You identify with it, you designed it!

Energized - by your accomplishment? More content and less anxious, as well. Those piles won-t be staring you in the face! Your achievement is exhilarating. Be proud!

Capitalize - on your new found freedom. Utilize your time on other things in your life. Enjoy! Rejoice! YOU did this!

Generalizing - Remember, organizing takes time. You-ll have a bigger mess during the process. Take baby steps. Organize one area at a time, by means of the above method.

Most printable grocery lists are quite generic so as to be usable by a wide variety of shoppers. That's fine, however, for maximum efficiency you'll want to customize your grocery list to include the items you regularly shop for. Do this the first time you use a new list.

-- Keep it easy.

Next, there are a couple of options you'll want to consider.

1. One option is to print off multiple blank copies of your printable grocery list after you finish customizing it. Keep your copies in a folder in your kitchen so you can conveniently grab a new copy whenever you need one.

2. Conversely, you can print off just one copy of your customized grocery list and drop that copy into a clear plastic sleeve. By doing so you instantly make your grocery list laminated. Just use a dry-erase marker and you can use your printable grocery list again and again.

What Baby Nursery Furniture Do I Really Need?

Don't really know what a proper baby nursery furniture set should contain? As a first time parent, it can be quite confusing when it comes to all the different things you think you might need for your newborn. Advertisers states that you would need a really full furnitured room, complete with all the "must-have" items that they will tell you is a must.

You could buy a complete baby nursery furniture set from the start, and that way get all the basic stuff in one go, but I personally think, from my own experience, that to buy baby furniture one by one could be better. I will explain to you why in this article.

You will undoubtly need some basics. A crib and a wardrobe is a good place to start. Let's elaborate from that.

Remember that the baby will play on the floor for the first year or so. Maybe then, a full furnitured room is not the number one emergency thing you would need, but a nice play room for the baby? With floor space. Invest in a nice big rug, and maybe some colourful bog boxes for storage of toys, so that the baby can reach them.

You aren't going to spend all that much time in the nursery room anyway. Your baby will be with you in the kitchen, living room, outdoors. It's going to be years until you can leave it by itself to play. Or maybe a better way to put it: a child up to three years of age doesn't want to play on it's own anyway. He or she is going to want your company even when big enough to play in its room. The toys are going to be brought wherever the rest of the family is, believe me!

But still, you will of course need some basics at least (and you want to decorate the room to look welcoming and cosy of course)

A good place to start is a big wardrobe. If you invest in a good wardrobe you can keep it for years. Remember that it has to be steady and safe. You want to be absolutely sure that it can't overturn when your baby starts to lean on to it trying to walk, or climbing in to it. If you are unsure that it will be steady enough, secure it to the wall.

Besides that, a crib is another furniture you will of course need. There are plenty to choose from. Personally I like the amish baby nursery sets. They are all natural and doesn't contain any toxics colourings or impregnations.

Good if you have allergy in the family Maybe you use a cradle for the first six months or something like that, but after that a crib is really a good place for the baby to rest in. See to it that the cradle is a place that he or she will enjoy staying in, and a place for it to relax. Put some nice pictures on the wall above the crib, get a crib mobile or some fun things to hang from the sides of the crib.

What more should you get? Well, a nursery table is a piece you will need there if you are not doing the diaper changing somewhere else in the house, personally I have it in the bathroom, because I want access to running water. The rest is really up to you. Maybe you want a little table and some chairs or whatever, that will make the room look comfy, but don't rush in to things buying too much when the baby is small.

Whatever the reason most people enjoy seeing butterflies in their gardens and would welcome more. The good news is that it is not that difficult to add the essential ingredients that attract lots of these beautiful creatures, and keep them happy once they have turned up.

It is worth saying that a garden that works for butterflies is perfect for other creatures too. Like the canary down the mine, the presence of lots of butterflies is often an indicator of a healthy environment.

Butterfly lifecycle

Every infant school pupil knows caterpillers turn into butterflies (and moths). But most of us are often less clued up about the details of the butterfly lifecycles. In the late summer months buddleias and other flowering plants are alive with the flutter of butterflies, but within a few weeks the majority though not all will die as winter approaches.

Others like the small tortoiseshells and red admirals, look for a quiet dry hideaway and prepare to sleep until spring. When warmer weather arrives they find a mate and the female lays eggs that hatch out as the years first brood of caterpillars. Once those caterpillars have eatten their fill, they go through the transformation from chrysalis stage to winged adulthood.

Some species lay a last brood of eggs in autumn which then remain unhatched until spring. A few others survive the cold months tucked away in chrysalis. If you are setting out to make your garden more butterfly friendly, it is worth thinking about different strategies for winter survival.

Obviously you need to provide flowers for adult butterflies in summer and early autumn, but just as important is some sort of shelter during winter and somewhere for caterpillars to live. Now for something sweet to eat

The main priority is definitely nectar, Butterflies will visit any garden if it has the right mix of plants. Pick a selection from the list below.

* Flowering March to May Aubretia, Alyssum, Sweet rocket and Forget-me-not.

* Flowering June and July Buddleia, Red Valerian and Pot marrigold.

* Flowering August to October Buddleia, Candytuff, Sweet William, Sedum spectabile and Michaelmas daisy.

Where you position the nectar plants can make all the difference. Butterflies are very sensitive to heat loss and will avoid chilly winds, so a south facing border that catches the sun but is protected from breezes is a certain favorite.

To get the maximum value from what you plant, it is best to put flowers together in blocks rather than scattering individual varieties here and there. This is because as butterflies move around an area they are more likely to spot blocks of the colours they are searching for.

Somewhere to lay eggs

The best butterfliy garden needs to be more than a nectar cafe. It should also provide somewhere for females to lay their eggs and for young caterpillars to feed. Watch a female butterfly looking for the right foliage to lay her eggs on and you will see her briefly taste each leaf. She is very choosy as most caterpillars will eat only the leaves of one or two plant species.

This means that if you allocate some space to growing the right plants you will probably end up growing beautiful butterflies too.

Also it is worth finding some space for some plants caterpillars love to eat. EG: the catterpillar of the orange tip will eat honesty, while the brimstone's caterpillar likes buckthorn leaves and the comma enjoys munching hops. The favorite catterpillar food of the peacocks, red admirals and tortoiseshells is the stinging nettle.

Provide a shelter

Lastly but not least catterpillars and butterflies need shelter during the winter, it is a matter of life or death. This doesn't mean you need to buy the "butterfly homes" you sometime see in garden centres, the best tactic is to be a little more relaxed about your end of year garden clear up.

When we clear dead flower heads from borders in autumn we often destroy chrystalises. While over grown hedges and climbers are typically the places adult butterflies pick to hibernate so leave the tidying up until spring.

What is on your Kitchen Bench

Today let's discuss the kitchen as a whole, what is it used for in your house and what would you like it to be used for.

- Firstly food preparation and cooking area
- Where keys and mail is dropped when walking into the house
- Where the main phone is for the house
- Maybe there is a breakfast bar
- Possibly there is a laundry cupboard

This part is actually really easy.

All you need to do is work out what part of the bench you use for what. We all have a part of the bench that we prefer to chop our vegetables etc on, a place where breakfast is normally served, where the main phone for the house is (this one, okay some of you out there don't have your main phone in the kitchen but in general, it is the central phone for the house), is there a key hook on the wall, a ledge in the kitchen where you put your mobile phone and wallet (for you men) and ladies where you drop your bag?

The other thing that these days is becoming more and more common is that people are having their laundry cupboards in the kitchen (saves space in smaller homes)

Now is you clear everything that is on your bench right now, you can use the kitchen table to put everything on, or on the breakfast bar if you have one. The great thing about this is that it clears the bench.

Give the bench a good wipe down and let it dry. It will be nice and fresh when you put everything back.

Now go through everything. I mean everything! If you have some small containers with all in-sundry in them, clean them out to, baskets with bits... you name it, this is a clean start for your kitchen bench so give it your all.

You may want to get a few grocery bags, one for Rubbish, one for Belongs in another room in the house, One for storage, and one for charity.

Now as you are going through things start dividing them into these bags. If there is something that you come across and it hasn't been used for a long time ie Months, even a year, and its not sentimental, then in the charity bag.

So in the end, you will be left with only what you need on the bench.

- Bread boards
- Toaster
- Kettle
- Phone
- Maybe a nice dish
- Paper towel holder
- Fruit bowl

You may have more things that you want on your bench, and that's fine, but we just want to get rid of all the bits that creep from other rooms onto the bench, i.e., hair clips, small toys, cd's, DVD's, keys, glasses...

If you are going to have mobile phones in the kitchen then why not get a flat basket or dish that is decorative and useful. So that everyone knows where the phones are put. If you don't have a key hook then this can also be where the keys live. It makes it so easy when you know where everything is.

So once you have gotten rid of the don't belongs and the rubbish, you can start putting everything back where it belongs.

Breakfast bar wise, it makes it so much easier in the mornings is you have a clear space by the breakfast bar. The tray with all the breakfast condiments can be brought out of the pantry and put on the bench, nothing has to be moved.

It also leaves this space free when you are dishing up dinner and need a space for the plates to be laid out. And lastly if you have children is a brilliant place for them to do their homework at night, you can be cooking dinner, but still be there to supervise and help with the homework.

Lastly, if your laundry is in the kitchen, hopefully it is behind closed doors. Attempt to keep those doors closed when not in the laundry, and wipe them down from time to time.

If you don't have doors then a curtain or screen can be an alternative. Oh and try to keep the laundry piles inside the laundry cupboard, not spread around the kitchen.

If you do have cushions that allow you to remove the cushion insert, then you can simply drop them in your washing machine on gentle cycle and air dry.

Protect your hands with rubber gloves and, using a soft-bristle brush, scrub one section at a time. Rinse fabric with your hose or clean buckets of water and dry metal hardware with a clean dry towel to prevent rusting.

However, dirt, mildew, and mineral deposits can cause your patio furniture to wear more quickly than you'd like. 12 Small Deck Design Ideas

A small deck does not necessarily have to remain a small deck. There are a number of techniques to make that less than large area increase in size and become more comfortable. The key to small deck design is simplicity.

1. Create the illusion of one big area from 2 smaller spaces. If your deck is bordered by the backyard lawn then allow this outdoor living area to spill out into that open space and it will create the illusion of being larger.

2. Create colorful flower or garden beds on 1 or more sides of the deck so that it does not seem to float like an island in the grassed area of your backyard. Instead the multicolored flowers and greenery will work together to seamlessly blend with the deck and become an integral part of the backyard landscape.

3. Emphasize the deck and not the property line. Instead of letting the lawn end at the property line create perimeter planting beds that will turn any attention inward toward the deck. The careful placement of trees, shrubs and plants in these perimeter garden areas will lead the eye back to the deck which should be the focal point of the yard.

4. Use plants with interesting textures in containers on the deck or in flower beds that border the deck. This will focus attention onto the deck and not the surrounding landscape. If there are stairs or steps that link the deck with the yard, use container plants on the sides of the steps to further direct attention toward the deck surface.

5. Concentrate color in a specific area rather than scatter flowers throughout the backyard. Groups of flowers in containers on the deck or in flower beds adjoining the deck create more impact than scattered blooms. If color is used in more than 1 location, repeat 2 or 3 colors to link the areas together.

6. When possible, emphasize views adjacent to the deck. If there is a water feature, a lovely grove of trees or garden area nearby make sure to leave that view open and accessible from the deck. Move or rearrange furniture and other objects on the deck in order to facilitate this.

7. Place any type of screening strategically to enhance privacy and block only those sights that are distracting. Movable screening provides a great deal more flexibility than fixed types in enabling this to occur.

8. Install a water feature or hang wind chimes close to the deck. The soothing sounds that they create will mask other noises that come from the street or neighbouring yards. A trellis or vertical sections of latticework can provide support for dense greenery which is not only attractive to look at but can also filter out sound and prying eyes.

9. Install built-in seating on the outside edges of the deck since it takes up less room than furniture that stands alone. Also use a round table since it takes up less room than rectangular types and allows the seating of additional people for dining or entertaining.

10. Keep decking patterns simple. Small patterns and contrasting textures created a feeling of being hemmed in and add very little to the appeal of the overal deck design.

11. Move furnishings to the side of the deck to open up the central space and create the illusion of size while also allowing for much easier access and traffic flow on and off the deck.

12. Add a patio off the edge of the deck to enlarge the amount of usable space. Link these 2 areas by using:

a) a similar material such as wood, brick or stone in some way

b) by the use of container plants or planter boxes

c) by using a similar color in some way (flower, decorative art piece, etc.)

d) by installing an arbor or pergola to provide shade protection for all or parts of both

Careful use of a variety of simple deck design techniques can enhance the look of any small deck and create the illusion that it is larger than its actual size.

Step #1 - Deck Height:

Railings are generally required for decks over 36 inches high above ground level and for any set of stairs. However, 24 inches might be a better minimum because in today's society people are more likely to sue a homeowner in the event of a fall. On a wonderful spring, summer or autumn evening when the weather is ideal and you and your family and guests are having a terrific time, it would be a shame to have to leave your deck just because the sun is going down. You can make such an evening last as long as you like by considering various alternative deck lighting solutions.

A low-voltage deck lighting system is ideal. All you need to install deck lights yourself is a weatherproof 120-volt outlet, some basic hand tools and a few hours of spare time. Best of all, low-voltage deck light systems don't require you to take the precautions necessary with household 120-volt systems because they are not powerful enough to give you a serious shock.

Take the time to plan your deck lighting system. For safety and appearance sake, consider installing deck lights at steps and handrails. In general it's a good idea to install lights so that they cast maximum illumination onto the stair treads. Railing lights should help you find the railing in the dark but not interfere with using it.

When planning lighting to go around seating areas keep the deck light fixtures relatively low. Avoid installing lights on top of railings or posts where they might shine in people's eyes and pose a safety hazard.

All that remains to be done is to wire up the deck light fixtures and mount them where you want them on your deck. You just follow the installation instructions supplied with your kit.

Finally, you are ready for that spectacular moment when the sun starts to go down. Instead of retreating into the house, simply sit back and watch the magic as your deck becomes another jewel under the night sky.

Cost
If cost is the main factor, the grill to go for is charcoal. They start at $15.00 for a small, basic unit and only $30.00 for a standard 22" kettle grill. Natural gas or propane grills can offer additional cook spaces that a charcoal or smoker unit cannot. If you plan to cook full meals on your grill, gas burners and a warming tray come in handy. A rotisserie option may also be important to you depending on what you want to grill.

Flavor
If flavor is the most important item on your list, a smoker or a charcoal grill should be your first priority. Smokers are meant to slow cook over time and impart a smoky flavor to meats. You can choose the type of wood to smoke that will give you the flavor you are looking for. The only problem with a smoker is when you want a quick pork chop or hamburger, it isn't so quick. Consider a gas grill for quicker cook meals and a smoker when you really want to impress the neighbors. Charcoal is the next best in the flavor department with no gas undertone. Gas grills can also impart a good grilled flavor, and now many gas grills have a smoker option on them.

Portability
When portability is the most imporant requirement, propane is the way to go. Charcoal grills run a close second. Small propane tanks make it easy to take your grill camping or to a tailgate party and you aren't left wondering where to put the smoldering coals. Charcoal can work and there are several small portable units available; just make sure you have a plan for what to do with the used briquettes.

Plastering Your Walls Home Diy Project

Plaster is a highly useful material to smoothen out your walls whether you have just decided to give a new image to your house or if you have had flood or fire damage, plaster will bring your home into a elegant state.

Old houses have been built using bricks and then they are then plastered over, if you have had flood or fire damage it is most important to remove the plaster, usually you are most likely to remove the plaster at the level of 1 m above the ground, to do so you could use the slow tiresome method of a chisel and hammer or you could use a kango electric tool to speed up you plastering diy project, these can be expensive but you can also hire them.

The kango basically is like a vibrating chisel, it is extremely powerful and can even smash through solid concrete with ease, if you choose to use the kango please also be aware you may need to use a chisel for certain areas of the room for example near plugs and pipes as this tool may rip through them and if live may electrocute you.

When removing the old plaster, make sure you do so all the way to the bricks or breeze blocks and make it as smooth as you can do so, a good method when using the kango is to get a Stanley knife and draw a rough line along at a certain level and then point the kango downwards until you reach the bottom then moving to the side and pressing further down so you can get as much plaster off as you can.

Once all the plaster has been removed you will be ready to plaster the walls, unless you have had damage such as flooding in which case you will need to dry out the house and seek advice from authorities to if it is ready to be plastered.

The most commonly used plaster is the gypsum plaster and this plaster is used in two layers, the first layer will be around about 10mm thick and the second layer will be around about 3mm thick. The first thing you need to do is to mix up the plaster ready for use, the best plaster to use is Do it yourself plaster as this will not set as quickly as the usual professional plaster products, if the diy project is large it is best to get the large bags instead of the ready made tubs as you will be using a large amount.

With the bags you will just need to mix in water with the plaster following the manufactures instructions. Once you have mixed your diy plaster you will need to scoop it onto your trowel, and then onto the plaster trowel and then apply it to the wall, once this has been done make scratches in the plaster so that the top layer of plaster can easily attach the plaster underneath.

Once this has been done apply the finish plaster on top of the repair layer, this layer needs to remain smooth so use a spare piece of wood to scrap off excess plaster on your walls.

An easier option than plastering is using plaster board, but this will not give the same feel of satisfaction as doing the plastering yourself.

Careful planning is the key to a successful bathroom-remodeling project. Before you begin any work in the bathroom, create a budget, a floor plan, a list of supplies, a timetable, and important legal considerations. Let's break it down by subject.

Are there really secrets that you aren't supposed to know? There are, but let's look at what a "secret" is. It isn't something that nobody knows, after all. In fact, anyone can learn almost anything on the internet today with enough time. But the fact that this information is available doesn't mean that you have it.

Secrets, then, are simply pieces of knowledge that most people don't have, and which some people try to hide or to keep others from knowing. This secret information may be out there and available to you, but it won't be easy to find. Here are a few examples.

Credit Card Secrets

Did you know that some credit card companies have been changing the due dates on statements without warning? Oh, the date is right there for you to read, but they know that you get used to paying the bill at the same time every month. Some people will pay late due to the changed date, and that means more money in late fees and interest. Obviously, you aren't supposed to know this.

Did you know that on the same credit cards from the same bank, some people are paying an annual fee and others are not? You might think that because it says right there in black and white that the annual fee is $25, that everyone pays it, but it isn't so. If you are a good customer, and threaten to get rid of the card, the company will probably get rid of the fee. But you have to ask. I have had a fee dropped many times just by calling and asking. If they won't drop the fee, I cancel the card. I never pay fees for credit cards, and there are plenty of cards without fees.

I had a lump on the side of my nose many years ago. It had been there, slowly growing, for at least six years. A doctor said he wasn't sure if it was cancerous or could become so. Further tests would be needed, which I declined. Instead, I opted for a natural substance which I had read about in an alternative health newsletter. I bought this oil for six dollars at a health food store and applied a drop to the growth each morning. In six weeks the growth was gone, and it has never returned.

This is why we are seeing calls for regulation of natural products, including vitamin pills. It isn't the consumers who want "protection" from the "dangers" of vitamins and herbs. It is the companies that have to compete against these cheaper alternatives.

Television News Secret

You probably have noticed how frivolous the news has become. Chances are, more than once you have sat there watching the evening news and thinking, "There must be something more important than this to report on." It really isn't a secret that the networks are more inclined to entertain than to inform you with news.

What is more of a secret is that not all news broadcasts are that way. In other parts of the world, you actually get important news that you never hear about here. In fact, even CNN has more than one type of programming. Here in the United States, we get the fluff. But when I was in South America, I watched CNN International, and their was a big difference. I actually learned about what was going on all over the world. It still wasn't great reporting, but it was far above CNN's domestic broadcast in quality.

Why? Perhaps we want the fluff, and so they give it to us. Apparently, it isn't tolerated as well in other places. Also, perhaps we aren't supposed to know these secrets of television news, of differing coverage. I don't suppose the news networks want to advertise the fact that we get fed the worst coverage of world news.

Be prepared to physically and psychologically keep yourself safe. A good way to get ready is to think ahead. Here is a list of tips to help you do that:

- Think through how you normally react to crisis situations. Do you flee, freeze, or fight back?
- Think of a few past times to see if there is a pattern. You can modify how you react by imagining a different reaction if needed.
- Talk to friends about ways to handle incidents and think through different actions.

There is no right or wrong way to react. Every incident is different. The best action depends on a variety of factors such as the locale, the assailant, presence of weapons, your personal responses, etc.

When Walking
Plan and use the safest and quickest route. Walk well-lighted streets at night. Stay alert to your surroundings; appear confident and purposeful. Be familiar with businesses that are open late. If you feel scared, go straight to a location where there are other people. Walk with a companion if possible, espessialy at night. Carry your keys and cash in a pocket, not in a handbag or wallet.

If you are being followed by someone in an auto: Turn around and go quickly in the opposite direction. Try to obtain the license plate number and a good look at the car and call the police. If you are being followed by someone on foot: Turn around to let the person know you see them. Immediately cross the street and walk or run toward a location where there is likely to be other people. Call 911 or get someone else to call for you.

In cases involving verbal abuse: Ignore it and walk away. If you are by yourself at a bus stop, proceed to the next stop if there are other people there.

When Driving
Drive with car doors locked and windows closed. Keep your billfold, handbag, and valuables out of view while driving. Do not leave them next to you on the seat. If you see another driver in trouble, don't. Call the police for assistance. Park in well-lighted lots. Look around before you get out of your car. Put valuables and packages in the trunk or out of sight before you arrive at your destination. Always lock the doors, no matter how quickly you plan on returning. When returning to your car, have the door key in hand. Look inside before you unlock the door and get in. If you are being followed while driving, drive to the closest police or fire station and beep your horn.

When You're Home
If there is someone strange at your door, don't indicate that you are home alone. Do not open the door to anyone you do not know without knowing their identity. Identification cards can be pushed under the door. If someone wants to use your telephone, offer to make the call yourself while the person waits outside. Never buzz a stranger through an apartment security entrance. Do not give any information to "wrong number" callers. Ask instead, Ask, What number are you calling? Don't tell an unknown caller that you are home alone. Verify the identity and intent of any person calling for information about you by calling the person back. Hang up immediately if you get threatening or harassing calls. Don't say anything. If the calls continue, keep a record of the date, time, and content of all calls. Then notify the police and the phone company.

If you are buying a home that comes with a dishwasher already installed, you will want to check around the base of it to check for water damage. If the floor around it is discolored or if the base of the cabinet near it is warped, you might have a leaky dishwasher.

The Phone Call That Saved Me $60

My wife and I are always looking for ways to save money - a habit from leaner times. But sometimes it's possible to stumble upon new ways to save money when we're not even looking. This happened to me the other day.

I was considering whether to downgrade our cable television service. We would be traveling occasionally during the next six months, so if the disconnect and reconnect charges weren't too high, it might pay to cut back to basic cable for a while. I called and asked about the charges. It was unfortunately $20 to downgrade the service, and would be $50 to upgrade. A total of $70 to save about $20 per month for anywhere from three to six months (we weren't sure how long).

Before I could finish doing the math, the nice lady on the phone told me I shouldn't disconnect and reconnect. Too much trouble and expense, she assured me. Instead, she suggested that she just give us $10 off the bill for the next 6 months. That seemed fair. We weren't even sure what we were going to do, and we saved $60 for asking.

My friends consider it lucky when these kinds of things happen to me. Of course they don't call and ask. I once talked my satellite television provider down from a $150 upgrade charge - down to zero! The key? I threatened to cancel the service altogether. What else can you save money on with a phone call or two?

More Ways To Save Money With A Phone Call

If you are one of the uninformed and unfortunates who still pay annual fees for your credit cards, call the credit card companies and threaten to cancel. If you have been paying on time, they won't want to lose you as a customer. In that case, the operator will transfer you to an "account specialist" whose job it is to change your mind. Tell this person that you just don't want annual fees, and he or she will usually drop them for you. After I first heard this years ago, I had the fees dropped on three out of four cards within the hour.

Getting a few quotes on something is another great way to use the phone to save money. This can even work with large purchases like appliances. But the more important things to get quotes on are those that mean recurring expenses. Save $150 per year on insurance and it can really add up over the years. Different carpet cleaning companies can vary by as much as $200 for cleaning the carpet in your home. Call and ask.

Last Christmas season, we called Delta Airlines directly to get a ticket for my wife's grandmother to come here from Ecuador. The round-trip cost? $504 - savings of about $200 over the cheapest online price quote (we had checked extensively). As I said, we are always looking for ways to save money - and sometimes all it takes is a phone call.

There was not one square metre of floor which the client deemed acceptable. A specialist consultant drew up a repair spec, and this was put out to six companies. Two were flooring contractors, and four were cleaning companies!!

The credentials of the companies invited to tender were never properly established. Despite the enormity of the problem, the formula for the remedy was also based on the same criteria - take the cheapest price.

If you can vent the heat from items like clothes dryers and stoves to the outside of the house, do this while they are in use, as well.

Cold surfaces in the home such as pipes, especially in basements, should be insulated so condensation does not form. This not only prevents mold, but also helps to prevent the pipes from rusting.

With some smart actions, preventing mold from growing in your home is not just beneficial, it is easy. The benefits of a mold free home definitely outweigh the cost of going to the small bit of trouble to keep it that way.

Intuitively the link between decluttering and creativity makes sense doesn't it? Creativity thrives in the land of new ideas and open thinking, while clutter tends to be characterised by clinging on to old ideas, attitudes, habits and possessions. In order to free yourself up to be fabulously creative, you often need to be prepared to let go of the clutter first. Inspiration is unlikely to emerge unless you've created a space for it.

Clutter generally builds up quietly and imperceptibly over time. The reason for this is that not all clutter starts out its existence as clutter. If you think about the clutter in your life at the moment, you can probably recognise that much of it was originally useful and meaningful. It's the passing of time and the moving on to different phases of your life that convert many of your once-wonderful ideas, items and relationships into life clutter.

You'll probably find that, strangely enough, some of your old clutter consists of items and ideas that were once your creative playground. Many of yesterday's creative sparks evolve into today's clutter. It doesn't mean that they weren't creative at the time or that they had no worth, simply that time has passed and they are no longer current. I like to imagine them as the creative stepping stones that have brought me to where I am now - I couldn't have got here without them, but their value is now in the past and by clinging on to them, I prevent myself from moving forwards.

That's why decluttering has to be a way of life, a state of mind and an ongoing activity. Particularly during the times when you want to produce creative output.

There's an important distinction to be made between clutter and creative messiness, though. A reader of my newsletter wrote to me about her decluttering routine: "I am an artist and always clean my entire studio before beginning a new series of paintings. Sometimes this might take two days! I put everything in the correct place, vacuum, wash windows, rearrange the feng shui, etc. When I am finished, I bless the space and then proceed to totally mess it up with all my creative materials and energy!!!"

The space you declutter may be a physical or a mental one - the important thing is that it's clear, and that's what allows it to be a creative start point. It liberates you to get out all your coloured pencils, all your bright ideas, all your interesting words... to throw them in, mix them around and to make a gloriously creative mess. Then comes that amazing flow experience of being totally absorbed as, from the mess of creative potential, a sense of focus gradually emerges.

Most times, for me, I don't think the focus would come unless I allowed myself the creative messiness first.

In this context, then, clutter is the stuff that blocks you from having the clear space in which to get creatively messy.

It may be environmental clutter - physical things gathering dust and taking up your creative space. That's generally the most obvious kind of clutter to spot and to do something about.

But it may be mental or emotional clutter. For example: the internal voice that says you should be getting on with something more important, or the fear of producing creative output that isn't perfect first time. These thought patterns and emotions are clutter too.

To embrace decluttering as a way of life and turn it to your creative advantage, there are three key skills to develop:

- Recognising clutter before it even enters your life and stopping it at source

- Acknowledging which of your previously useful thoughts, attitudes and items have now turned into clutter

- Being prepared to thank the clutter for its earlier usefulness, then let it go

Bleach Is No Mold Murder

In my mind's eye I can still see the little spots of mold on the ceiling above the shower of my childhood home.

I can still smell the bleach that my father sprayed on the mold. And I can still see the mold reappear soon after.

We all dry our hair before going out in the cold so we don't get pneumonia. We all wear clean underwear in case we are in a car accident. We all attack mold growth with bleach to kill it.

Well, wet hair does not cause pneumonia. The police, paramedics and doctors won't really look at your underwear, and chlorine bleach is ineffective in killing mold.

Bleach may help with temporary mold removal, but it will win no awards for mold remediation. Due to its dilution, bleach is too weak to eradicate mold permanently, especially if the surface is anything other that a hard, non-porous one.

Surprisingly, bleach will become more and more dilute even in an unopened container. There is an approximate 50% dilution in only 3 months as it sits on the store shelf or in the cabinet beneath your kitchen sink.

Chlorine cannot penetrate porous materials due to its ionic structure. So, if bleach is sprayed on wood for instance, only the water in the solution soaks in, as the chlorine remains on the surface. This only accomplishes further mold growth.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) does not list bleach as a disinfectant of mold. Other agencies have referred to bleach as a poor cleaning agent.

So bleach is out. What is in? The fancy terms relating to getting rid of mold include mold removal, mold remediation, mold mitigation and mold abatement. They all sound wonderful, but how are they actually accomplished?

Current recommendations include containing the mold, killing it, removing it, and finally, protecting against future infestation.

First off, any sources of water (mold's lifeline) must be located and discontinued. This may necessitate water extraction or possibly water damage restoration.

Fungicide should then be used to kill any mold and to prevent its recurrence. The next step is to clean and remove as much of the mold as possible. Even dead, mold can trigger an allergic response in some people.

Finally, protection against further infestation can be accomplished by cleaning, maintenance, and regular inspection of the common sources of mold growth.

Many people choose to remediate their mold problem on their own. It is important to remember the dangerous health risks associated with exposure to mold. It is not overkill to wear protective gear including gloves, mask and bodysuit.

Goggles have even been recommended. So as you suit up and get ready to get rid of that mold, leave your spray bottle of chlorine bleach behind. It has been acquitted on all counts in the murder of mold.

You Do Not Need Stain Remover To Remove Stains From Carpet

Sometimes removing stains is not as complicated as most professional carpet cleaning companies would like you to think. Before you run out and buy a really expensive stain remover or hire a professional carpet cleaner. Try this simple process to remove stains and you just might be pleasantly surprised and at a much lower cost.

The first thing to do if you have a spill of liquid is to get a soft white cloth, even better if it is cotton and blot it dry. Do not rub and scrub as this will just embed the stain into the fabric. Once you have completed this process, if the stain is still visible, dampen it again with a teaspoon full of warm water and go through the process once more.

If this does not work then you need to get your dishwashing liquid out and put a few drops on a table spoon with warm water and dampen the stain again, let it sit about 2 minuets and then start blotting it dry again.

This is hard work and it takes a little time but will remove most, if not all of the stain if you keep repeating the process.

The second type of stain is a dried stain. This is more difficult and more time consuming because a few more steps and some actual stain remover may be needed.

First take some warm water and dampen the stain area, do not use a lot of water as this will soak into the padding and may make stains rise from below and may even spread the stain. Then sprinkle with baking soda and allow to soak for one half hour. One it has soaked it will or should be partially or mostly dry.

Lightly dampen again and place a few drops of dish washing detergent in a table spoon and add a little water. Place this on the stain and blot dry with a white cotton cloth. Allow to dry and vacuum. If it does not completely remove the stain and repeat the process up to 5 times.

If it is not removed within 5 times then use a spot or stain remover. Spray the stain remover on the stain and let it soak for 10 minuets and then spray again. Then follow the directions on the stain remover.

Removing dried materials like gum or peanut butter requires that you first place ice on it to make it brittle. Once this is accomplished, vacuum the area and then follow the steps above to remove the final parts of the stain.

This is the cause of many health problems because it is often ruled out because you do not know it is there.

A small leak in the roof or gutters of your home may cause enough moisture to start the process also. The leak may be so small that you do not even know that you have a leak. This is a dangerous scenario also for several reasons. First is that the moisture can cause mold growth. The next is that your home can start rotting from the water damage and go on for years before it is noticed. I have seen damage from small leaks that caused mold and other damage that ends up costing tens of thousands of dollars to the property owner.

Lack of insulation on air conditioner lines can cause condensation and keep enough moisture to start growing mold as they go through walls. This is one of the easiest to fix, simply replace the insulation on the copper tubing, it is quick and cheap and will save you a lot of trouble in the future.

Window air conditioners that do not divert condensation away from the home can cause problems, make sure the drain is not leaking into the window framing and you will be much safer.

One of the most common causes is a home fire. When your home or business catches fire, the fire dept. uses water to saturate anything that may spark back up. This puts large quantities of water in walls, insulation, drywall material and may other locations that you may not be aware of.

Easy Ways to a Cleaner Kitchen

Keeping a kitchen clean is a task that few of us enjoy. However, it has to be done, so why not make cleaning up as easy as possible? Here are a few tips for doing common kitchen cleaning tasks that you are likely to encounter often.

Vinyl flooring seems to attract dirt and stains. Mop your floor with a mild detergent, let it set for a while, then finish mopping. This allows the detergent to penetrate and loosen the stains.

To remove water spots on stainless steel sinks (or appliances), dampen a clean cloth with regular white vinegar and clean, then wipe dry with another cloth.

To remove shoe heel marks, use a pencil eraser or rub with a rubber sole shoe.

Remove soap residue and clean your dishwasher economically by running a cup or two of plain white vinegar through an entire cycle.

Eliminate refrigerator odors by putting a drop of pure vanilla in a small dish and place in the back. You can also use a small piece of cloth or cotton.

When food gets baked on and stuck on casserole dishes, try soaking the stuck on food in a couple teaspoons baking soda dissolved in boiling water.

To clean your microwave, place a bowl of water inside and add a couple tablespoons vinegar. Microwave on high for about three minutes. Let stand a few minutes, and carefully remove the bowl. The interior will now be easy to wipe clean.

To clean blenders and food processors, fill up about halfway with water and add a couple drops of liquid soap. Blend for a few seconds, rinse, and dry.

To help clean and freshen garbage disposals, sprinkle in three tablespoons of baking soda, drop in a few ice cubes, and turn it on. When the ice is crushed and gone, continue running the disposal with the hot water running (about 3 more minutes).

Use an old toothbrush, along with an abrasive cleaner or baking soda, to clean around the backs of faucets and other tight places.

Another way to remove burnt on food from pans is covering the spot with Coke for a while. This works great on car battery terminals too!

If you have kept a tomato-based food (such as soup or pasta) in a plastic storage container, chances are that it is permanently stained (especially if you microwaved the food in the container). Which this cannot normally be cleaned, you can avoid it happening again by spraying your container with non-stick cooking spray before each use.

Remove stains from your aluminum pots and pans by boiling a quart of water mixed with 3-4 tablespoons of vinegar. Scrub gently after with a scouring pad and soap.

Use lids left over from butter or margarine tubs as coasters for bottles of honey, syrup, or oils when they are opened and stored in the refrigerator or cabinets. This will catch the inevitable spills and washing the lid is much easier than cleaning the spill from the shelf.

Use a spoon rest near the stove - then you just have to clean it, and not all over the counter.

Remove food odors from your microwave by keeping an open container of baking soda inside between uses.

Take care of the stain as soon as possible, so that is doesn't have a chance to set in. The longer you wait, the worse your chances are.

The next key point is to use a stain remover and follow the directions exactly as they are written. Also, make sure that your stain remover is not going to ruin your fabric. That would defeat the purpose of removing the stain.

If you apply at the front, it may actually push the stain further into the fabric. The idea is to move the stain out of the fabric, and clear as much as you can with the towel.

Also keep in mind that using bleach to remove a stain may cause uneven color removal. If your garment is colored, make sure you are using the right kind of bleach.

If at first you don't succeed, you can try multiple rounds of stain removal. It may take patience, but often you can see results with multiple applications. Again, be sure to follow the directions exactly as you do this. You may need to be patient and wait for the stain remover to do its work.

Flooring can be tiles, vinyl or carpet, though some people have laminate wood flooring. You could also have under floor heating put in and use the space you would have had for a radiator for something else.

Bathroom home improvements can be expensive, but if you work to a budget, your new bathroom will last for years.

Organizing your Drawers -- Junk Drawer Test

One thing about being organized is that you know exactly where the item you are looking for is, at the time you need it. This is exactly what happens with an organized drawer, but it is usually not the case with a junk drawer.

It is just too easy to just dump items in drawers, because they are out of site. Over time, as this dumping continues, the drawer becomes an absolutely disorganized mess -- hence the term, "junk drawer".

Drawers should never be stuffed with gadgets and utensils. They should be purposely organized, storing items that are easy to access. Your drawers need to be labeled with a name besides "junk". They need a real purpose like: utensil, silverware, knife, office accessory, and so on.

Everything in the drawer should be used on a regular basis (at least once every two to four weeks) and should be easy to access.

Is your drawer up to the test? Let's see:

• Take everything out of your utensil or gadget drawer and put these items in a box.

• Leave this box on your countertop or on a shelf.

• Every time you use one of the items, put it back in the drawer. Do this for two to four weeks.

The items that are left in the box are either duplicate items (you couldn't find it previously, so you bought it again) or items you don't need. In other words, what's left is probably the "junk" that was in your junk drawer.

Now you need to decide whether to get rid of these items, or to keep them in a different location. Be realistic here: if you didn't use these items in a month, you probably won't use them at all. Act accordingly.

Linen has always co-existed happily alongside the other natural fibers, even giving rise to interesting combinations: linen/cotton, linen/silk, linen/wool, linen/hemp... However, artificial and synthetic fibers posed a threat to European linen after World War II.

Jettisoning home economics, women's lib wholeheartedly embraced these new easy-care fabrics, imbued with modern flair, albeit often to the detriment of comfort and elegance.
